A new experience in a compulsory curricular unit for an engineering degree is described. Several project works, based on real world environments, were proposed and developed. The group of students involved has no previous knowledge on automation theoretical aspects. They were encouraged to profound their basic knowledge by, autonomously, reflecting on their observations of real experiments. The teacher role was of a catalyst, being the learning progress built by the students themselves. The students’ feedback was very positive and rewarding. They react quite well finding no difficulty in applying automation concepts before settling all the theoretical background. The successful results were not only in the learning progress on the automation field but also on the development of their creativity, encouraging them in their future decisions and promoting synergies in team work.

Design Concept of an Interactive Interface for Plant Operational Safety

Some ethical aspects of automation system design are discussed, based on a case study in power plant automation. The discussion uses the “doing-good approach” and relates to three levels of design: business level, company level and engineering level. It is proposed that from the results of the case study that, in order to respect ethics in automation, the evolutionary design approach can strong...

Automation and the Learning Resources Center

IN RECENT YEARS many community college learning resources centers (LRCs) have found themselves in the unenviable position of needing to do more with less. Use of Evidence-Informed Deliberative Processes – Learning by Doing; Comment on “Use of Evidence-informed Deliberative Processes by Health Technology Assessment Agencies Around the Globe”

The article by Oortwijn, Jansen, and Baltussen (OJB) is much more important than it appears because, in the absence of any good general theory of “evidence-informed deliberative processes” (EDP) and limited evidence of how they might be shaped and work in institutionalising health technology assessment (HTA), the best approach seems to be to accumulate the experience of...
